reunions from overseas and at overseas

This page is dedicated to our effort to meet up with our long lost classmates, whether at home or abroad.
Each time we get a chance to meet, we grab it and here are the events:

"Wai Fong's 2009 homecoming" Gathering At Subang Sheraton Hotel

Seated: Ah Kam, her 'look-a-like' daughter Pin-pin, Kooi Choo
Standing: Wai Fong, Chiew Fung and Chiew Har.

From left to right: Zaharah, Ah Kam, Kooi Choo, Chiew Fung, Chiew Har and Wai Fong.

A Visit to Melbourne, March 2009

These are pictures taken on a visit to Choy Hoong's abode in Melbourne.

I have not seen Choy Hoong after Form 5!
We had tea at her house and I got to meet her husband and her daughter.

It was a short but 'fruitful' visit (took me to an orchard and wine shop).
I can tell you a secret -fruits that are fresh and free are d best-tasting ones!

Palmini's and hubby, Dr Guna's visit to Perth, 2009

Just when you think, there's no more news to tell, an unexpected visit of Mini and her hubby to Wai Fong in Perth!

At Black Swan Lake ....

... can't make out any swans ...

this is a rather familiar sight of the 60's....
Dark glasses, peace sign... some habits live on....

2nd Organised Reunion

HI-T at the Sheraton, Subang
Date: 15th of November 2008
Time: 12.00pm till 4pm

Everyone is just dying to see the pictures...which speak volumes and save on writing/typing.

... a dozen roses

who had gathered themselves....

to share the fragrances and thorns in life

This is our 2nd attempt to get the new and old together, those who have met, those who haven't and those that were supposed to but still hadn't, sigh!!!

This reunion saw a few new faces, Pauzeah, Aishah, Eng Choo and Mary Catherine.

Selvi came all the way from Ipoh; and Aishah, from Melaka and whom we will not see for the next 2 yrs as she goes off to Sudan to be with hubby.

Next question, why is it always in Subang Jaya? No other place, is it??? Simple: People there are more hard working and make the effort, hee...hee...(smug) but we don't forget all those who travel far to make it to the reunion and we can all vouch that no one regrets that meeting!

Raya Reunion

Raya Puasa Reunion
(1st & 2nd October 2008)
Venue: Batu Gajah

At Zaharah's house:
seated in front from left: Ong Eng Choo and grandchild, Palmini, Selvi and Zaharah.
standing behind: Ah Kam, Oi Leng, Bernice and Siew Heong

I can imagine- Everyone talking at the same time, as always....

Here is the account of what happened from Palmini:

"Wonderful meeting up after 32 lo....ong years with Ah Kam who is ever so witty, Bernice who knows not the word humility or modesty but prancing around like a sweet seductive 17 year old (Sorry Bernice if you are reading this!!), Zaharah - very sexy still who pushed her chests out a wee bit too much when Guna said "Smile, stomach in, chests out" for photography; Eng Choo who stumped us with her grand child in tow, Siew Heong who has become so demure and sweet natured; evergreen Oi Leng and Selvi."

Not to be outdone, this is Zaharah's account:

"As what Ah Kam, Oi Leng & Mini have related.... it was indeed fun for all of us! The best Hari Raya that I ever have had in a long time! Even my family members reminisced with Selvi & Eng Choo about old times. They still clearly remember the good olde days when both of them visited my home (more frequent then the rest). Too bad Kooi Choo was not around. Eng Choo had a mini reunion with my brother. Eng Choo reminded him of the time when he accidently sat on a cactus & had to painfully pull out the thorns from his butt! He had a good laugh & retorted that his secrets are not safe anymore. Eng Choo is a mother of 4 grown children (2 girls & 2boys) and a proud grandma of 2 girls. She lives in Setapak now with her daughter & she takes care of her lovely grandchild. She does have a house in BG and comes back once in a while. She will sat up her own e-mail very soon and will be talking to us! I have even volunteered to give a quick simple lesson for her. BTW...she has an impecable memory! A big Thanks to Ah Kam and Bernice who "arranged everything" with Mini so that she can visit us and happily go to Cameron Highlands soon after. Bernice loudly proclaimed that she has to wake up at 5.30am! Mini brought along her witty, sporting & charming husband, Guna & her teenage daughter, Derwina. As we all know, he is a Plastic Surgeon. There was some funny stories that he related to us on his experience with his patients. He was indeed "one of us" in no time.
Siew Heong looks so good and even appear taller than before! She has a 9-year old son, Stanley, a sporting young man. BTW... another "Ipoh Mali" girl, Lim Swee Yin did sms me. She was out of town. Oi Leng, a big thanks for travelling all those extra miles and you even sacrifice another day to visit Cikgu Yaacob
!"

Yes, girls, they gatecrashed into Normah's house! Ya, we know, when the girls are in big numbers, they will be up to mischief!

At Normah Harun's House:
from left: Zaharah, Bernice, Selvi, Normah, Eng Choo, Siew Heong and Ah Kam.

Look at the goodies: lemang, biskut...air hijau, orang hijau (evergreens..) and mata kita pun hijau (envy)....

Here are the details of what happened from Zaharah:
"After all the food, picture taking etc. we left to seek Raihatul Jani's home. All we had was a memory of a "unique house on stilts". Selvi patiently (with 2 other cars in tow) asked "around" but we had little luck. Finally, when we were about to give up hope, Ah Kam stopped by a bright, pretty yellow house. It turns out to be Normah Harun's house (our classmate in Arts class & she is now a BM teacher in Convent BG). Of course, she invited us in and we had another go with the rendang, lemang etc. Later, with her leading the tow, she led us to Raihatul's home. She was not back yet from Shah Alam (due that evening) & Selvi dutifully took her mobile no. down. Obviously, we were still excited and feeling exuberant from our near success, so we decided to search for Puteri Norita Bin Megat Abdul Rahman. It was an easy quest this time around. As the photo shows (from OiLeng earlier pix), she is married to this nice & friendly guy, Salleh (used to work in a Bank but has retired) & has 4 tall & pretty girls & a boy. The eldest girl is 21. She lives in Kajang. Takes 2 commuter train to work in AMBank, Jalan Pudu (near Tun Shin Hospital). Norita's younger sister, Puteri Norida (Convent alumni too), is a Teacher in Convent BG. 3 teachers have passed away (God bless their souls) : Mrs. Gill, Cikgu Maimun & Cikgu Maimunah or Azizah (primary school ugama teacher). Done for the day.... we happily bade goodbye (for the moment) & parted ways"

At Puteri Norita's house:
from left, seated: Selvi, Puteri Norita, Bernice and Ah Kam.
standing: Eng Choo and her granddaughter, Zahara and Oi Leng.

ai yo-yoh, who is suffering from shaky hands syndrome?
(forgot what u call that disease....)

at least we know the one who took this pic still ok!

Ah, the highlight of the Raya gathering culminated at Encik Yaacob's house. Here's Zaharah's continuation:

"The next day we gathered again (our meeting place) at the Old Railway station for Cikgu Yaacob's home at 10am. Raihatul was with us. (She left for U.K. after her M.C.E. to study Chemistry in Scotland & soon after returned to work in Petronas in Labuan. She moved back to KLCC office in year 2000 to head the HSC unit. She now works/leads the HSC lab in Shah Alam & resides there at Section 9, behind Concorde Hotel. She has 2 college-going boys and another 16 year-old child.) Our highlight of the day was visiting Cikgu Yaacob. He was indeed beaming with pride and looking good for his age. Only 62! I brought our Form Five Science class pix for easy indentification. He has a good memory & we reminisced & updated him on our old colleagues & seniors/juniors. There was a lot of laughter & conversation. He asked each of us for our"profile". He introduced us to his wife, kak Jamaliah & he has 3 grown up boys & 2 girls. The eldest is a Lawyer & the 3rd boy is back on vacation from the UK or US (?). Another daughter is a Doctor in Bahrain & the youngest girl works as Head of Department (BlueRay) at Disneyland in LA. After he left Convent, he was heading several departmental positions in the Education ministry. His last position before he retired was with SYS."

At Encik Yaakub house's:

Back row: Normah Harun, Zaharah and Selvi.

A youthful looking Encik Yaacob with his ex-students, Zaharah and Bernice (obviously no match for him in looking young-he holds the evergreen record!)

Normah and Raihatul, meeting them again is a memorable event, welcome aboard!

more reunions

Melbourne folks meet
(?? September 2008)
Siew Khoon (Jennifer) visited Choy Hoong (Sally) at her home in Melbourne after living in the same city for ???years, right after Siew Khoon went back after our historic reunion in Summit Hotel. What a joke!
According to emails, we gather that Choy Hoong is an accomplished cook fixing a delicious lunch for Siew Khoon and Siew Khoon hasn't lost her Malaysian culinary skill either (made Yam cake, right?)

Ipoh after 32 years!

(6th or 7th September 2008)

Oi Leng met up with Palmini and Selvi after 32 years!

the 3 ladies who got together
Looking at them, yes, we would be able to recognise them anywhere now!

Palmini writes:

"The setting was Coffee Beans in Jusco in Ipoh on a Sun afternnon at 4.30pm. I was early and decided to walk around and after 5 mins I saw this lovely lady sitting there whom I recognised from the photos sent from the KL reunion. There was Oi Leng whom I had not seen for 32 years....... and so it was back to girlie chats and recalling of everything we had done and seen in our teens.

Selvi joined us 20 mins later and she too had not seen Oi leng for 32 years. I had not seen Selvi for about 4 years. We went through some old black and white photographs that Selvi managed to retrieve. It was a time for catching up on all the things we missed in those 32 years..boyfriends, marriage, husband, children, jobs, etc....

As Oi Leng being the filial daughter had to take her aged parents out for dinner before leaving for Penang, we decided to go back to my place which was just 5 mins away. It is my home where we escape from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Once we step in we are in our own world. Hubby (Guna) and daughter Davinia were there. We spent some time indoors before taking some snaps shots outside in the lush garden. We had 2 massive waterfalls which were demolished after 10 years due to high maintenance. Now it is mainly plants.

Then it was time to say bye again to Oi Leng and Selvi. We dropped them back at Jusco and will eagerly wait for the next time Oi Leng comes down....hopefully with more time to spare with us. She is a wonderful daughter I must say.... and a great friend to make that attempt to still keep in touch with old friends."

Loving couple, Datuk Dr Guna and Datin Palmini

'Mid-Autumn' Meetup at Ipoh
-from mamak shop to Palmini's house...
(14th September 2008)

After so many years, different lengths of time with different people, we finally met again... myself (Kooi Choo), Siew Heong with her little prince, Stanley; Selvi who became the chauffeur of the day; Palmini with her hubby; and Chiew Fung, who had just been driven down from KL by her hubby.

The 1st phase - outside The Coffee Bean at 9.10am with the arrival of Siew Heong (boy, was I surprised as I had no idea she was coming);
then we were picked up by Selvi to meet Palmini somewhere behind Tesco where Mini was having breakfast with Datuk Dr. Guna.

Palmini had to leave as her hubby had to make his rounds and she was not feeling well. We chatted until Chiew Fung called to say she was at Jaya Jusco, so we had to leave to pick her up and Siew Heong had to leave to prepare for the mid-autumn festival prayers.

(Info: Siew Heong had not seen Mini and Selvi since 1976; I had not seen Selvi and Mini more than 10 yrs and met Siew Heong again 2 years back).

The 2nd phase - At Palmini's house
After picking up Chiew Fung from Jaya Jusco, we headed to Mini's house at Ipoh Gardens.
Palmini's house is a dream as Oi Leng says, we were charmed from the driveway right up to the doorstep and then right up to the "roo..ooms at the top of the stairs"! (psst...wait for her garden birthday bash next year)

(Info: Chiew Fung, Selvi and Mini were in Upper Six at ACS in 1977-78; had not met since then?)

Of course, what we enjoyed most is to meet again and talk, catch up and bond. Unfortunately, I had to leave at 11.50 as i was summoned back to the in-law's for lunch. It was goodbye to Mini too for everyone; Selvi sent me back with Chiew Fung and they adjourned somewhere after that...we'll have to wait for the two to continue with their tales...

Note: Selvi brought some pics and a newspaper cutting of the 'boria' group-will be getting these scanned and posted in our blog soon. Look out for updates!

Other reunions

Dinner date at Subang Parade for Sau Peng, Yoon Fong, Zaharah, Ah Kam and Kooi Choo
(29 Aug 2008)

Here we are girls, after all the emailing, 5 of us managed to meet at the Manhattan Fish Market, Subang Parade for dinner from 7.30 till 10pm (when they close). Then we adjourned to the Coffee Bean till midnight....yeah, we yakkety yak while tucking in assorted muffins and blended fruit juices.

It was a good night out. It was the first time Sau Peng met all of us as she missed the one at Summit Hotel a few weeks ago. We called this the pre-Ramadhan meeting as Zaharah would be fasting the week after so we were desperate to have one before she starts dieting as she calls it.

We should have more impromptu outings like this, good for the soul!

Mei Ching and Oi Leng (in Penang)
(29 June 2008)

Meeting up with Mei Ching and Oi Leng in Penang. It was a short breakfast meeting as I had to leave that afternoon.
Oi Leng and I used to meet every now and then, but I had not seen nor spoken to Mei Ching since we left school in 1976!

Presenting :
Our class brainiest girl and a head prefect too. Today she is a dentist practising at the Lam Wah Ee hospital. Oi Leng is the only one who enjoys her service as she stays in Penang too.
Glad to meet her after all these years and the fact that I recognise her instantly at the hotel lobby shows there isn't much change.
She's like most of us, juggling a career and a family... but takes the time to email us in between patients!

Reunions

Summit Hotel, Subang Jaya
(10th August 2008)

For many, it was 32 years since we last met or saw one another. For some, it was just a few years as some of us managed to keep in touch after we left school, from chance meetings to contacts given by mutual friends. But whatever the hiatus, the feeling is still there.

This is the beginning of many more meetings I hope!
